Breaking Down New Medical Cannabis Laws

By trovecannabis | | Cannabis News, Education, Legal, Medical Cannabis

Laws, rules, and regulations surrounding cannabis, set by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB), seem to be ever growing and evolving. So much so, it can make your head spin – and not in the good, elevated way. So, let us do the heavy lifting and break down two new developments that impact the weed you buy.

Compliant Medical Cannabis Products

In our lovely state of Washington, cannabis products that are deemed “compliant” meet certain standards set by the Department of Health (DOH). These products are designed to be beneficial for medical use, undergoing rigorous testing to ensure quality and safety. Honestly, we love that.

Testing For Safety

Compliant medical cannabis products have passed voluntary testing standards for:

  • Prohibited pesticides
  • Heavy metals
  • Mycotoxins (aka mold)

These standards are in place to ensure that the products are of high quality and safe for medical use. Products that meet these standards can be identified by a specific logo on their packaging. (See examples below.) This logo indicates compliance with Washington Administrative Code (WAC) chapter 246-70.

Types of Compliant Medical Cannabis Products

Compliant products fall into three main categories:

General Use – These include edibles, flowers, and concentrates and are available at any dispensary.

High THC Products – These contain higher amounts of THC (between 10 mg and 50 mg per serving) and are only available at licensed and medically endorsed dispensaries. (Like Trove!) They include capsules, tablets, tinctures, transdermal patches, and suppositories.

High CBD Products – These contain low levels of THC and higher levels of CBD. They can be found at any dispensary.

Compliant Eligible Products at Trove

We’d like to take the guesswork out of the equation, so we’ve implemented a handy dandy badge on products that are eligible for compliance. Look for:

When you see the DOH Eligible badge, that also means those products are exempt from excise tax for medical cannabis recognition card holders.

New Low THC Law

In other exciting weed news, amendments have been made on statutes that limit buying and gifting cannabis. SHB 1249 allows dispensaries to sell more low-dose cannabis-infused liquid products by increasing the allowable THC limit per transaction – provided they are packaged in small doses. Specifically, dispensaries can sell up to 200mg of THC in a liquid form per transaction, with each unit containing no more than 4mg of THC.

We’ll break it down further. Previously, a drink with 4mg of THC, in a 12oz can, would be limited to 6 cans per consumer. Under the new bill, you can buy up to 50 cans at a time of low-THC drinks.

I know what we’re bringing to the next pool party!

And again, because we like to keep things as simple as we can, we have implemented a “Low THC” badge on our menu on drinks that fit the above requirements. Look for:

If at any time you have questions about product limits or specifics regarding medical cannabis sales, please don’t hesitate to ask any of our Budtenders. It’s our job to know these things and spread the weed word!

Now that we’ve dropped some knowledge on you, go relax your brain, enjoy your summer, and stay responsibly elevated!
